Uniquely Colored Sand Beaches in Hawaii: A Rainbow of Color
Have you ever dreamed about strolling along a black sand beach fringed by palms? Maybe dipping your toes in sand the color of a green olive? Hawaii beaches have these colors, and more! Come along as we explore the uniquely colored sand beaches in Hawaii, and where to find them.
Colored Sand Beaches in Hawaii
Black Sand: Big Island of Hawaii, Maui & Molokai
Red Sand: Maui
Green Sand: Big Island of Hawaii
Orange Sand: Molokai
Please exercise caution if you visit these beaches, because most aren’t protected by lifeguards. There could be rough currents or dangerous swimming conditions. For this reason, we recommend not swimming if you are unclear about the ocean conditions.
Black Sand
Punalu’u Black Sand Beach
Located on the southeastern side of the Big Island of Hawaii not far from Naalehu, lies one of the dreamiest beaches in Hawaii. There’s a photo of my mom, from the 1980’s, and she’s standing on Punalu’u Beach with her toes dipped ever so slightly in the rich black sand. Lush coconut palms rise up behind her. She’s wearing green shorts and a white blouse, and looks lost in thought in paradise. It’s easy to daydream on this sparkling onyx beach! Although not the best for swimming, this is the perfect place to take a stroll. Also a popular hangout for Hawaiian green sea turtles, and rainbows make a frequent appearance too.
Waianapanapa Beach
Equally as pretty, you’ll find Waianapanapa Beach near Hana, on Maui. Although smaller than Punalu’u, and with sand not as deep black, this lovely crescent-shaped beach is a sight to behold. Therefore, make this black sand beach a “must-see” when you’re driving along Hana Highway.
Colored Sand Beaches in Hawaii: Green Sand
Papakolea Beach
One of only four green sand beaches in the world, you’ll find the Big Island’s olive-hued beach not far from the town of Naalehu, and the southernmost point in the US. Swimming isn’t recommended, and the beach requires either 4WD or a 2-mile hike, but adding this beach to your bucket list is a must!
Red Sand
Kaihalulu Beach
Located on on Maui not far from Hana, this beach can be difficult (and a little dangerous) to access. There is a hike required, and please exercise caution. Swimming is also not recommended…but the beach sure is pretty.
Colored Sand Beaches in Hawaii: Orange Sand
Papohaku Beach
This remote beach on Molokai offers beachgoers a very unique sand color. Orange, to be exact – especially when the sun hits it in the afternoon. Sometimes referred to as Three Mile Beach, you can obtain permits for overnight camping if you desire.
Honorable Mention
Butterscotch Sand
Kaanapali Beach on Maui and Sunset Beach on Oahu both have distinctly-hued sands. Golden, or as I prefer – butterscotch plays off the vivid blue water creating a breathtaking contrast.
