Tiki Time: Iconic Hawaiian Cocktails
Although you certainly don’t need a drink to enjoy Hawaii, many visitors envision sipping on a refreshing Hawaiian cocktail while they gaze at the sunset. Therefore, we thought we would compile our list of the best Hawaiian cocktails. Keep in mind that most of these drinks are more tropical than Hawaiian, but it’s okay because there’s nowhere more tropical than Hawaii!
Iconic Hawaiian Cocktail: Mai Tai
The Mai Tai is probably the most popular Hawaiian cocktail, and for good reason. The classic version marries aged rum, orange liqueur, orgeat (pronounced or-jah), lime juice and simple syrup. In addition, there are numerous varieties of Mai Tais you can try. Our favorite place to experiment is the Mai Tai Bar at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Kick back, relax and enjoy a Mai Tai or two while you soak in views of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head.
Pina Colada
Even though the Pina Colada originated from Puerto Rico, you can still get a darn good one in Hawaii. Cool off from the warm Hawaiian sun with this frosty drink made of rum, cream of coconut and pineapple juice.
Chi Chi
If you’re craving a Pina Colada, but rum isn’t your thing…this is the drink for you. Order a Chi Chi, which is essentially a Pina Colada with vodka in lieu of rum.
Iconic Hawaiian Cocktail: Blue Hawaii
Of course, we must mention Hawaii’s very own Blue Hawaii cocktail! This delightful concoction can be served frozen or over ice, and is usually served in a tall glass. Vodka, light rum, blue curacao (which gives it is distinctive color), pineapple juice and sweet and sour mix make up this classic beverage.
Tropical Itch
Bourbon, rum, triple sec, passionfruit puree, pineapple juice, bitters and lemon juice make the backbone of this delightful and potent Hawaiian cocktail. The cherry on the top is the souvenir bamboo backscratcher.
Lava Flow
This enchanting Hawaiian cocktail is so delicious that it could double as dessert. A cross between a Strawberry Daiquiri, Banana Daiquiri and a Pina Colada, this is the perfect drink to cool off with by the pool. Both light and coconut rum, strawberry puree, banana, pineapple juice and coconut cream are blended with ice for a frosty dream in a glass.
If you want the flavor without the alcohol, order any of these beverages virgin (non-alcoholic). Frozen drinks such as the Lava Flow, Piña Colada, Chi Chi and Blue Hawaii are especially good as virgin cocktails.
