The Top 10 Things to Do on the Big Island of Hawaii
Visit the Southernmost Point in the US
Near the little town of Naalehu, at the end of windswept South Point Road, is the southernmost point in the US. There aren’t any fancy bells and whistles, or impressive monuments. Just a hand-painted sign pointing to rocky cliffs as the deep blue Pacific stretches ahead, as far as the eye can see. If you’re facing the sea, to the left you’ll see a sign marking the way to Papakolea Beach, an otherworldly green sand beach. The road requires 4-wheel drive, or you can access it via a 2-mile hike.
Take In Waipio Valley Lookout
Located on the Hamakua Coast, rising above verdant Waipio Valley is the Waipio Valley Lookout. Since the road leading into the valley has been closed since early 2022, this is the best way to soak in views of King Kamehameha I’s childhood home. Take in the crescent black sand beach framed by jungle-like vegetation and the breathtaking cliffs jutting into the sea beyond the bay. Afterwards, swing by Tex Drive-In for fluffy malasadas or a plate lunch.
Explore Volcanoes National Park
Undeniably the most popular thing to do on the Big Island, Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park isn’t to be missed. You’ll want to have plenty of time to explore this fascinating region. Highlights are Thurston Lava Tube, Kilauea Iki Trail, Crater Rim Drive, Chain of Craters Road, Holei Sea Arch, Mauna Loa Lookout, Steam Vents and Sulphur Banks. If you get hungry, grab a bite to eat at the historic Volcano House.
Stargaze Atop MaunaKea
You will be starstruck (no pun intended) as you gaze at the heavens on MaunaKea. Whether you visit an observatory or simply stop at a lookout on Saddle Road, you’re in for a treat. On a clear nights it feels like you can almost touch the stars. You can visit on a guided tour or drive yourself.
Stop By Punaluu Black Sand Beach
Not the only black sand beach on the Big Island, but definitely the best. Located off Hawaii Belt Road, on the southeastern side of the island, this scenic black sand beach is remarkable. Deep black sand ringed by lush coconut palms makes a striking picture. Green sea turtles and rainbows are frequent visitors too.
Relax at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area
Feel like relaxing under the warm Hawaiian sun? Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area located on the Kohala Coast is the spot. This large park and white sandy beach features a parking lot, BBQ grills, picnic tables, restrooms and more. Perfect for swimming, sunbathing, paddle boarding, snorkeling and surfing. Parking and entrance fees are credit card only, more info available here.
Tour a Working Kona Coffee Plantation
The Big Island’s Kona Coffee Belt is a mountainous terroir located not far from Kona. There are numerous farms you can visit, and even museums dedicated to preserving the history of the most celebrated coffee on the planet. Take a tour of a Kona coffee farm, sample authentic Kona coffee and purchase some to take home.
Snorkel with Manta Rays
Spend an evening underwater with these gentle sea creatures. As you sail out to Manta Ray Village, prepare to don your headlamp and wetsuit and have an experience you won’t forget. Afterwards, warm up with hot cocoa as you head back to shore. Included in our Big Island All-Inclusive Vacation Package.
Fall in Love with Akaka Falls
Journey to the Garden of Eden at Akaka Falls State Park. One of the most most beautiful things to do on the Big Island, these lush botanical gardens are teeming with tropical birds, jurassic-like vegetation and bursting with fragrant blooms. The cascading Akaka Falls is the cherry on the sundae.
Mosey Over to Waimea
Ditch the beach and head for the hills in Waimea. Home of Hawaiian cowboys (paniolos), this inland district will make you think you’re in Montana. Rolling hills and bright green pastures abound, but stick around for the vibrant food and arts scene too.
