Loco Moco: Recreate This Hawaiian Comfort Food at Home
Loco Moco is classic Hawaiian comfort food. In Hawaii, you can find restaurants serving it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. You’ll find lots of recipe variations when you’re in Hawaii, but we still like the classic version. Consisting of a mound of fluffy steamed white rice, a grilled hamburger patty (or two), sautéed onions, rich brown gravy and topped with an over-easy egg you may need a nap after this one. Although it’s a heavy meal, it’s a popular plate lunch.
What Is Loco Moco Similar To?
You’ll probably find it closest to a hamburger steak dish. In fact, there’s very little differences, except that the all the ingredients are stacked on top of each other instead of side by side. The addition of the egg also sets it apart.
Where Can I Find It in Hawaii?
You can find Loco Moco all over the Islands, but our favorites are:
Loco Moco Recipe
Before I get started, I’ll be the first to admit that this isn’t an “authentic” recipe. Although, to be fair, many recipes that claim to be the real deal use a packet of gravy mix for the gravy. In any case, this recipe is easily made at home, will satisfy your family and will stand up to plate lunch versions from Hawaii.
I use a rice cooker to make rice at home, and my standard measurements are one cup of dry rice to 1 ½ cups water. If you don’t have a rice cooker, just make rice on the stove per the rice bag directions.
Ingredients
- 1lb. Ground Chuck
- 1 Packet Onion Soup Mix
- 1 Can Cream of Mushroom Soup
- 1 Can Water
- 1 Sliced Sweet Onion
- 4 Eggs
- Dash of Shoyu (optional)
- Steamed White Rice
- Salt & Pepper
Directions
- Make 4 patties with ground chuck. Season patties with salt and pepper (and any other seasonings you prefer).
- Fry patties over medium-high heat until internal temperature reaches 160º. Remove from pan and drain excess grease from pan. Set aside burger patties aside.
- In same pan, sauté onion slices until soft and translucent.
- Add onion soup mix and cream of mushroom soup to pan. Fill up soup can with water and add to pan. Stir to combine. Add beef patties back to pan. You can add a splash of shoyu to the gravy if you want to.
- Let gravy come to a gentle simmer, cover and cook for 5 minutes.
- In a separate pan, cook eggs to your preference. The traditional Loco Moco style is over easy.
To serve, form a mound of rice on your plate. Top rice with burger patty, and onions on top of patty. Smother with gravy. Place egg on top for the finishing touch. Serves 4.
