Is the Big Island of Hawaii Changing Its Name?
You may have seen recent news reports about the Big Island of Hawaii changing its name. We break down what it really means, especially to a visitor, as well as other Big Island info.
Big Island of Hawaii Changing its Name? To What?
To begin, this really has to do with the way the island is listed in a State of Hawaii’s Board of Geographic Names database. Currently it’s designated as the Island of Hawaii. There is a motion to “rename” it either Hawaii or Hawaii Island. The reasoning behind this is that the other islands are named Oahu, Maui or Kauai. Changing the Big Island’s official name in the database would keep it on par with the other Hawaiian Islands’ names.
However, let’s rewind even further. You may be asking…
Why do people refer to it as “The Big Island of Hawaii”?
Good question! The answer is fairly straightforward. We call it the Big Island of Hawaii, or just the Big Island, because it’s the biggest island! Since it’s officially the Island of Hawaii, and the state is Hawaii, plus the islands are also known as the Hawaiian Islands; it can be confusing. Therefore it’s colloquially known as the Big Island.
Do you know the that the most populous island, Oahu, isn’t actually the biggest island? In fact, Oahu is only the third largest island. Since Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head and many other uberpopular attractions are located on Oahu, we consider it to be the main island. Oahu is also home to the state capitol, Honolulu. Consequently, you wouldn’t be alone in thinking the main island is also the largest island!
What makes the Big Island of Hawaii so special?
Now you’re probably thinking, “If Oahu is the main island, what’s the deal with the Big Island?”.
We’re glad you asked, because no matter what you call it, the Big Island is amazing. Home to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, black sand beaches, world-class stargazing, lush rainforests, cultural heritage sights, Kona coffee farms and the southernmost point in the United States – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

When Will We Know If the Big Island of Hawaii Is Changing Its Name?
We don’t know. The name change is still on the table. Incidentally, some are advocating for it to have a traditional Hawaiian name of Moku o Keawe.
More than likely, the name change will have very little bearing on your vacation, or even day-to-day life in Hawaii. The Island of Hawaii will always be the Big Island to most people. If you’re interested in finding out more about visiting the Big Island, contact us today!
