How to Spend An Exhilarating 48 Hours in Kauai
Let us show you the best way to spend your 48 hours in Kauai. Although you could easily spend a week on this lovely “Garden Isle”, you can still see the best this island has to offer in only two days. So come along, let’s not waste any time – there’s a lot to see and do!
48 Hours in Kauai
We recommend resorts and hotels in the Kapaa area as a home base, particularly if you are short on time. This charming town is centrally located on the eastern side of Kauai, and is a super convenient starting off point as you access different parts of the island. This is why all the hotels we offer in our Kauai All-Inclusive Vacation Packages are in this vicinity.
The First 24 Hours
Greet the day with a delicious breakfast
You’ve got a lot of exploring to do, so fuel up with a hearty breakfast. We like the Kountry Kitchen, located in downtown Kapaa. Their robust menu features locally-roasted coffee creations, and classic breakfast and brunch favorites with an island twist. Make the most of your morning and join their online waitlist – so you’re not wasting previous minutes waiting for a table.
Faster options include the always-popular Kauai Juice Co. Boasting three convenient locations, stop in for the freshest-of-the-fresh cold pressed juices, smoothies, bowls and more!
Visit the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”
After breakfast, head towards Kauai’s western side. Specifically, Waimea Canyon. Nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” by Mark Twain after his visit, this is one of Kauai’s crown jewels. Incidentally, it’s best to knock this out in the morning hours, and avoid the hotter afternoon sun. This region is chock full of lookouts (such as famous Kalalau Lookout), trails and hikes. Kokee State Park is also nearby. Also, don’t miss the nearby eccentric and artsy town of Hanapepe, known as the “biggest little town”.
If you’ve worked up an appetite, try one of Kauai’s ono food trucks for lunch. Popular options include Kickshaws and the Musubi Truck. If you’ve got a craving for poke, stop in Foodland, a local grocery chain that offers real-deal poke.
Spend an Afternoon on the River
Normally we suggest you enjoy a lazy afternoon after a busy morning, you only have 48 hours in Kauai, so no time to waste! The tranquil Wailua River winds its way though Kauai’s lush interior, offering jungle-like views along its shores. You’ll find plenty to do here, such as a riverboat ride to the romantic Fern Grotto, SUP rentals and kayak rentals.
Treat Yourself to a Dinner & Show
You’ve definitely worked up an appetite, so unwind at an authentic Hawaiian luau, set in an idyllic garden setting at Smith’s Garden Luau. We love this one so much – it’s featured in our Kauai Premier All-Inclusive Package and our affordable Kauai Saver All-Inclusive Package!
If you’re in the mood for something more low-key, hit up Duke’s Kauai in Lihue for incredible island dinner options and frosty tropical drinks.
Your Final 24 Hours in Kauai
Rise & Shine
Saenz Ohana Breakfast, located in Princeville, offers lovely options to get your morning started. Try the “Local”, a kalua pig and Portuguese sausage creation served as a sandwich or burrito. Equally impressive options are Hawaiian Sweet French Toast and the Fried Spam Sandwich.
Under the Sea
Next, head to Tunnels Beach, also known as Makua Beach. Some of the best snorkeling in Kauai can be found here, not to mention the view is stunning too. Great place to soak up the morning sun!
While you’re in the area, wander around the charming town of Hanalei. You’ll find eclectic shops, quaint cafes and just general prettiness.
The Show Stopper
You didn’t think we forgot about the NaPali Coast, did you? We could never. Miles upon miles of jaw-dropping scenery makes this a can’t miss. Our favorite way to experience it is on a sunset dinner sail. You’ll see majestic cliffs jutting into the deep blue of the Pacific, and waterfalls plunging into the sea below. The color palette here is cerulean, Kelly green and rich terracotta.
After your sail, head back to the Kapaa area and stop by the Lava Lava Beach Club, located at the Kauai Shores Hotel. End your evening with a nightcap at this “toes in sand” restaurant, which has live entertainment, daily, from 3pm – 9pm.
