Unique Hawaiian Customs
Please Take Off Your Shoes 🩴
In Hawaii, it’s customary to remove your shoes before entering someone’s residence. Some homes have a sign indicating this by the front door, but even if not, it’s still a good idea. This tradition was adopted from Japan, as it’s also usual to do so there.
Shaka, Brah 🤙🏼
Thankfully, you won’t hear a lot of horns honking in Hawaii traffic. Honking a horn is considered rude and unpleasant. Spoiler alert: It is! On the other hand, it’s a common practice to throw up a shaka when someone lets you merge lanes, or any other traffic courtesy. It’s an endearing way to say mahalo in traffic. Many of our All-Inclusive Hawaii Vacation Packages include a rental car, so this is a handy tip to keep in mind when you’re driving in Hawaii.
Flower Power 🌺
This Hawaiian tradition doesn’t only enhance a woman’s natural beauty, but it also has a hidden meaning. When a female wears a flower behind her right ear, it signifies she is single. Worn behind her left ear, it is a signal that she is taken.
Hawaiian Pidgin 🗣️
Pidgin is an English-based creole language spoken throughout Hawaii. it developed during Hawaii’s plantation days, as a way for workers to be able to communicate with others speaking different languages. It’s considered disrespectful to attempt to talk Pidgin unless you are from Hawaii.
Lovely Leis 🌸
The giving and receiving of a lei is a beautiful Hawaii custom. The lei symbolizes love, kindness and respect. Never refuse a lei when one is offered. Most visitors will receive a lei when they arrive in Hawaii. Leis are also given in Hawaii on special occasions such as birthdays, graduations, anniversaries and other momentous occasions.
