ABC Stores Hawaii: Everything a Tourist Needs in One Place
When visiting Waikiki, you may find yourself wondering what’s the deal with all the ABC stores everywhere. In fact, ABC Stores are ubiquitous in Hawaii. But why? And what does ABC stand for? What are they even selling? Should I shop there? Stick around as we answer your burning questions about ABC Stores in Hawaii!
A Brief History of ABC Stores Hawaii
The first ABC Store was opened by Sidney Kosasa on Kalakaua Avenue in 1964. His family operated a pharmacy in Palolo Valley, therefore he already had experience running a neighborhood store. Originally called “Mister K”, he later changed the name to “ABC”, in the hopes it would be easier to remember.
What does the “ABC” stand for?
Good question! According to our research, it doesn’t stand for anything. When Mr. Kosasa changed the name from Mister K, he chose a name that would be easily recognizable. However, locals affectionately say ABC stands for “All Blocks Covered”. More on that coming right up…
